Midwives provide medical care for you during pregnancy, birth, and the immediate postpartum period. Doulas provide you and your family with emotional, informational, and physical support during pregnancy, birth, and the immediate postpartum period. 

 You surely can pick your own doctor. But while making the decision on who you would want to be your provider, do your research. Make sure that the doctor you choose has a deep understanding of how you would want YOUR birth plan to go. 

 Birth plans are not required. But it would not hurt if you had a detailed layout of what you want done and how you want things done. With a birth plan, your provider will clearly see what he/she can and CANNOT do during the delivery of your baby.
